Promoting Greener Pastures
Natural wildlife around the region is very much so at risk to
constant suburban housing sprawl and unsustainable business growth. So much of America’s heritage
and identity is reflected in our natural environment’s intrinsic beauty, stamina, and persistence.
It is imperative that we continue in the steps John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt took in promoting the
beginning of the environmental movement. We must protect land now to be able to utilize it in the future
for its potential instrumental uses. For instance, Wolf Road Prairie Nature Preserve in Westchester
is one of the largest and last remaining natural prairies in the country, and its only 80 acres!
Ecological wisdom is one of the hallmarks of much of my platform and what the Green Party has accomplished for years at an activist level. Our public lands should be made accessible to the public, with the exception of protected wilderness areas. We need an improved funding stream for clean water programs, to meet our obligations under the federal Clean Water Act, for the Natural Areas Acquisition Fund (NAAF), and the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development Fund (OSLAD) in Illinois. I also support a statewide wetlands protection program. |
